Cape Town 10 January 2007 - Philip Copeman, project leader of TurboCASH
Accounting has announced a marked increase in TurboCASH downloads. "We
opened the year on 2 January with 1 100 downloads and have had over
7000 so far this year."
The increased penetration of TurboCASH is due to a number of factors
including, more access to broadband, release of a stable version of the
software, availability of Turbocash in more countries and languages
(60 Countries and 22 Languages), increased number of support
consultants promoting TurboCASH.
Copeman is still not satisfied with the increase and is determined to
see Open Source increase its market share. "Accounting is a major
application in small businesses. The target market for small business
users is at least 20 Million. These is still a huge ignorance of the
benefits of Open Source" he said. "Many users are still suspicious of
the Open Source concept. They find it hard to believe that free is
better and keep thinking that we have some 'cat in the bag' that we are
going to release onto the public that will make them pay a hidden
licence."
"In the industry we take it for granted that users understand the Open
Source concept. We also do not put enough emphasis on explaining to
users that Open Source is free as in liberty and not as on charity.
While Open Source will provide cheap solutions, we should let them know
that services are chargeable. It is to our benefit and to theirs that
they know that there are serious businesses that stand behind Open
Source.
