Friday, 16 November 2007

OpenTuesday Open Tuesday is a community that meets on the first Tuesday of each month and discusses Open Source issues. Begun in Finland and has communities in China and South Africa and is opening in other locations. TurboCASH users should make an effort to join their local group and meet members of other OS projects..

Open Tuesday offers like minded members of the Open Source community the opportunity to  network and promote their ideas.  Philip Copeman, project leader of TurboCASH Accounting Flew to Johannesburg for a presentation by Owen Njamela on the tax incentives available to South African companies for investing in Research.

It was an Eye opener for me to meet a South African Government Official that thinks and talks like us. Owen would appeal to Open Source warriors, with his 'just do it" approach. He explained how the South African government is determined to raise the level of original research to 1% of GDP and invited the Open Source communtiy to get stuck in. There is more information on the  Department of Science and Technology Website

For those interested in how Research Incentives specifically effect the Open Source industry, I have created a Wiki Resource, OSR . You can download a Spreadsheet with the calculations that shows the effect of the R and D allowances. It is available in Excel and Open Office Format.  Please feel free to contribute and contact me on philip @ pinksoft .co.za

There are also incentives availble in a number of other countries. I have made a list of these incentives on the Wiki Resource, OSR for ayone interested in doing TurboCASH contributions in other contries. I am most interested to make contact with financiers and developers in UK, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.
