The whole debate of Open Source vs Free
Software (yes there is a debate), brings out heightened emotions in
those unfamiliar with the territory. At the lower end of the business
there is a prevailing feeling that we have a “right” to free
software. Of course we only have a right if we have someone ABLE to
deliver that software too us. The capacity to deliver QUALITY
software for FREE is not a given.
You have heard me say that open source
is a development methodology, not a business model. It is good to
keep that in mind and also consider that it is a brand that is easy
to abuse. Run under the open source banner and actually sell a
proprietary solution. Its never simple.
Here are two really interesting
articles. An interview with the CEO
of Red Hat in which he explains how they are about to become a
Billion dollar business and an announcement by Sugar
CRM about how their next release will only be available for a
charge.
We are indeed fortunate to have the
financial structure that we do in TurboCASH Accounting the one
that gives us free accounting software.
